Word for Today: A Time
“There is a time for everything; and a season for every activity under heaven…” Ecclesiastes 3:1
There is a time for everything and a season for every activity. Our job is to seek and discern the time and season for the things God has set for us.
We live in a fast-pace, “urgent” society these days. Everything around us seems to be urgent, priority and a “must” complete. The fact that we live in Houston is enough said about feeling the crunch of time and the rush to get all we want to do and need to do accomplished. I believe God is reminding us today to slow down and focus. Some of you may be thinking, “How can I possibly slow down with all that is before me. Not only do I have responsibilities such as work, school, and family but on top of that I have a ministry and people whom I care for. And of course I can’t forget my unsaved family members and then don’t even remind me about my own spiritual walk and then of course that verse in Matthew about the Great Commission!” Fill in the blanks of that scenario with your own personal situation. How can you have peace, slow down and focus while there is SO much to do? When you rest and acknowledge in this sweet Truth, God is still God. He is in control, He Reigns and He is Sovereign. He’s got it all worked out! Whew, what a load off!
Why yes you may feel the burden and passion for so many different things at the same time, you were not created to perform and carry out every single idea and thought God gives you all at the same moment. God allows thoughts and ideas to continually flow because He is a Creative God but that is where we must come to Him (in our personal relationship with Him) and ask for wisdom and discernment as to what needs to be completed now in this very season He has ordained and purposed. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to complete something in a pre-mature or “inappropriate” season. For example, farmers must know what can be grown in which season and month before they spend their time, money and energy. In the same way, seek the face of God to discern and filter all of your ideas and goals so you can focus and precisely hit the ones The Great I AM has purposed for your life in this very season.
Busyness and distraction is a great opportunity the enemy uses to keep us from being focused and precise in the things we do for the Lord. If we can stay in the habit of doing a lot of everything, we never become excellent and excel at anything.
Application:
Pray and ask God to reveal what season of life you are in (sowing, harvest; winter, spring, fall, summer)? What is He preparing you for (character, mental, spiritual) in this season for the next season to come (ex: marriage, ministry, full time job, college, etc.)? What does He want you to accomplish in this hour? Write down what you sense God is showing you.
Then make a list of all that you are currently doing.
Compare your list against what was discovered during your prayer time in question 1. You should now be able to filter and narrow down to a few items what you are currently doing that does not position you precisely for what you sense God wants to do in and through you this season.
Write your areas of focus somewhere you can see it everyday to ensure you will remain focused until God allows you to move onto something else.
Note: If you currently have an open project, complete that one before you move to a new one.
God desires for us to fulfill our God given calling and purpose to which He created us. The only way we are able to do that is if we remain focused and work with precision and excellence in all things.
Prayer: Dear Father, I praise you for you are a creative God. As scripture states, everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. Please help me to discern the things you would have me to complete during this season of my life. I believe if I get with your plan, everything will fall into order. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
